T2’s SUE expertise and results-orientated approach to the Essen Lane widening project contributed  improved traffic conditions. 

With more than 55,000 daily drivers, Essen Lane between Perkins Road and Jefferson Highway/Interstate 12, serves as an important transportation link for many residents, businesses and healthcare facilities in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

A partnership between the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and the City of Baton Rouge aimed to relieve traffic congestion and accommodate growth along Essen Lane. 

T2 was engaged by the Louisiana DOTD to contribute expert subsurface utility engineering services to one of two key projects established to reduce the bottlenecking in this area.

Our team provided designating (CI/ASCE 38-02 Quality Level B) and locating (CI/ASCE 38-02 Quality Level A) Subsurface Utility Engineering services to map the underground utilities within the project limits.

We also provided utility coordination services to identify and resolve utility/design conflicts. Utility coordination can be complicated, as it needs to minimize right of way acquisition. Our utility coordinator initiated the concept of joint use to install duct banks for several communication companies. By knowing where the existing utilities were located, we were able to design the installation of these duct banks and allow the utility companies to use them for their relocation in the minimally available right-of-way.

T2 also coordinated with Our Lady of the Lake Hospital to determine how to accommodate their planned multi-million dollar expansion and still have the road/right-of-way widened on their property. Our team was given permission to access their construction zone to allow accurate mapping of utilities, which assisted with utility relocation management during road and utility design.

Our utility coordinator also worked with the many businesses along the project route, as well as with Kansas City Southern Railway, to ensure no utility encroachments took place.
